Den ganzen Artikel finden Sie in der School of the Wheel. Exformation of Information Exformation Sorry, but I am an artist and see some things a little differently than they do Further on the search for an exact explanation of the exformation, I came across the treatise of Dago Vlatis. Dago is a good friend of mine, with whom I studied many years with our teacher Arnold Keyserling. Here are some basic remarks about the exformation of information. You can find the whole article in the School of the Wheel. My form of exformation is painting over newspapers as seen in this image. “In the process of taking in information, which according to von Weizsäcker is always an understanding of information, however, a fundamental tendency can be observed: Understanding is always accompanied by reduction of information. For this process of information reduction, which is always coupled with the process of understanding, the Danish science journalist Tor Nørretranders has coined the term of exformation. If we follow his approach, information, in a real inversion of Weizsäcker’s word, would first of all be precisely that which is not understood. According to his view, it is only when information has undergone an exformation that it becomes understood information, communicated and communicable information. Exformation I am confronted with pure information, for which I cannot carry out an exformation, when I have a text in front of me, for example, for which I know neither the language nor the “alphabet” by means of which this article is written. If I have a newspaper article in Chinese in front of me, but I do not know Chinese, I understand nothing at all. The salad of lines contains for me innumerable information, with which I can begin however at all nothing, they say me nothing. The only exformation which I can carry out here perhaps, and thus the only realization which I can have, is the statement that it concerns Chinese — however also this can apply however only if I already know Chinese characters. But if I know Chinese, then the lines arrange themselves to clusters, which I recognize as already known characters and words, these then to sentences according to the rules known to me, from these in turn I extract the essence of the content, which I can then probably reproduce with even fewer sentences than are present in the article. If it is perhaps the report of a traffic accident, a further step of exformation would still be completed if I then file the contents of the report under, say, “car accidents”, thus disregarding any special circumstances of this event, since they do not seem important to me. In fact, practically with most of the information from the newspaper, we finally perform the total exformation, we forget it, we destroy information, since it has no importance for our life.” Yes, I am especially grateful about this information from Dago, as it directly concerns my project. By painting over the newspapers exactly that happens: total exformation. And further: “ Thus, cognition is always exformation, annihilation of information, insofar as the large amount of information about the many micro states of a given situation (many points, many molecules, many people) is always reduced to the small amount of information of a macro state (a geometric shape, a temperature, a social trend). So the line is the selection or summary of many micro states to a macro state, just the summary of many single points to the global shape of the line. Cognition and perception are never only pure information absorption, but always also annihilation, exformation of information. We can only experience and recognize an ordered world if we reduce the immeasurable amount of information to a few bits.” Here again the link to Dago Vlati’s “The silent knowledge” The question, however, whether one really destroys information by exformation, or “only” transforms it, remains open for me. In my project, the newspaper pages become “art products” that contain much more information than the original. Alone the distribution of the color pigments on the sheet produces enormous quantities of “information”, which the viewer must exform again, in order to see the picture! In a definition of exformation I once expressed it like this: Image or text messages are only the impulses that the receiver processes to his own communication. The image of “reality” arises in us through the process of communication. But if it is unclear who in us is exforming, that is, processing the information more or less unconsciously, what reality is meant? Due to the immense acceleration of the information process by the digital net, the process of exformation becomes more and more important. However, this does not mean that society is taking this into account. Rather the opposite. The population is becoming more and more a mere user, a user of a surface under which things are bubbling wildly and whose laws hardly anyone knows anymore. The “total communication network” already contains enormous amounts of “information” whose meaning is not questioned. If we do not learn to exform consciously, this avalanche of information will overrun everything unhindered. The modern terminals delude their users into believing that they have control over the flood of information. Without recognized exformation, however, this is not possible! Recognized exformation is the process of conscious information processing and the outsourcing of useless information in the communication process. But who decides what is useless, if we do not even know how we exform? I stick to my painting and simply paint over the “old information” of a yesterday’s newspaper. Whether that is exformation?
